The research aims to explore the meaning of the diagram and to confirm its role as a generative tool in architecture. The subject of study is the Yokohama International Port Terminal in Japan by Foreign Office Architects (FOA), which was built in 1996 and completed in 2004. Firstly, it is the notion and the role of the diagram that are going to be studied, from its appearance until nowadays. Emphasis will be given on the last 20 years and its exploitation by architects such as Peter Eisenman, UNStudio, SANAA and Bernard Tschumi. FOA are using diagram in many ways through their design and architectural process, while at the same time they also focus on the construction process. For Yokohama Port Terminal it was the circulation diagram (no-return diagram) main principle, which determined the whole growth of the structure and form, the organization of space and the selection of materials. In their attempt to relocate successfully the 2-dimensional diagram into the real 3-dimensional space, preserving their basic synthetic principles – ideas and the dynamic relationships, they use folding and topology. Topology and topological characteristics of the diagram and the method of folding will be examined by analyzing the building, so to study the analytical, auxiliary and generative role of the diagram.
