In the field of computational acoustics, the calculation of the impulse response ofa space is of vital importance. Acoustic parameters, frequency response and thecumulative spectral decay can directly be extracted from the impulse response. This thesis contributes on the development and utilization of a Finite ElementMethod in the Time Domain for estimating the impulse response and acousticparameters of a room.A methodology is developed for resolving the most crucial elements involvingthe Finite Element Method in the Time Domain. In order to develop an accuratemethod, we considered different modeling parameters (source selection, modeling of walls and acoustic material) and different parameters for thenumerical scheme (finite element meshes, time stepping method, time steppingscales). For this purpose the impulse responses and the acoustic parameters of areverberant space were computed and then compared with the measured ones. The results showed that the Time Domain Finite Element Method is an applicablemethod that provides good results for the calculation of the impulse responseand acoustic parameters in a reverberant room.As a utilization of the Time Domain Finite Element Method the method wasapplied in a Virtual Reverberation Chamber for the calculation of the absorptioncoefficients of an acoustic panel. The results showed that the method can be usedfor the prediction of the absorption characteristics of acoustic panels of variousshapes prior to their manufacture.
