Summary

Space gathers a lot of information depending on the perspective in which it is being examined. The complex relationship of human to the concept of space can be expressed but also designed only through the cartographic process. The map is a mean by which it is possible to imprint an area, regardless of the scale, for the purpose of simple guidance, but sometimes the purpose might be more complicated; to analyze an area, depending on the map-maker’s view and the available data.In the context of this postgraduate study, the study area, which is the Regional Unit of Chania, is examined in different perspectives, thus a creation of an Atlas of the Regional Unit of Chania is achieved. The anthropogenic environment, land uses, geomorphological features, as well as the natural and cultural environment of the study area is analyzed. With the capabilities of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to symbolize, import and process data, the optimal presentation of the desired result is achieved. The content of this Atlas can be used as a database or as a means of spatial analysis of the particular study area, in future studies of social, economic, environmental and technical nature, and of course in the combination of those; in spatial planning or spatial analysis studies.
