Summary

Microscopy is an invaluable tool employed by researchers and medical professionals of numerous fields for extracting crucial information about a sample. In the present thesis, microscopy is combined with spectral imaging in order to provide a novel, powerful instrument aiming to improve the diagnostic accuracy of the cancerous disease known as leukemia or blood cancer. An accurate diagnosis is of utmost importance as it determines the cancer type, stage and, ultimately, treatment, all of which directly affect the patient’s life expectancy and quality. Current diagnostic methods are qualitative and subjective, hence prone to human error. The presented system provides accurate, objective and quantitative measurements that can be evaluated by the medical professional during the diagnostic procedure.The system consists of three major components: The data analysis algorithms, the user interface and the hardware. Analysis algorithms are responsible for the resulting measurements and are implemented and optimized in C++. The user interface incorporates those algorithms and provides a practical and friendly way to obtain, analyze, view and locate the areas of interest. Lastly, the hardware is a custom microscope developed in the TUC Electronics Lab, including but not limited to a custom light source of various wavelengths relevant to the sample analysis and a positioning subsystem.
