Summary

Within the Marble Dionysos Quarry, on Pentelicon Mountain, in Athens, I have designed my thesis. In this quarry rests an area that holds a feeling of ying and yang. My focus is to redesign this place to become an attractive area for the public. This is why i have chosen to design a multipurpose building that will exist as a museum and an exhibition centre. Using the stone enviroment as a back drop to promote the exhibit products. The design specifies a building of 30.000 m2, an open air viewing area of 500 m2. Also the design will make use of large caves as a food-tasting and storage area. Lastly my design will include an underground car-park for 222 cars. The design of the building can be transformed and adjusted to the needs of each exhibition. An other issue to be addressed is the scale and the scope of the construction. The shape is inspired by the slabs that were cut from the blocks, which are the primary product of the quarry. Also, as there is a close relationshipbetween marble and water during processing, the building is designed to represent this. After the water has done its part we are left with glass filling the open space between the solid marble for the east facade. The solid reflects the marble and the glass the vacuum. This area has no access in water and electricity. So the design has to cover and these needs. The first decision was to design the roof of the parking as big basin where the water could be collected and reused.
