A series of laboratory clinkers made with variable lime saturation factors (LSF:88–91%) and C4AF contents (1.4–10%) were examined under different cooling conditions (normally cooled in air and quenched in water). These were investigated by X-ray diffraction and it was concluded for the fast cooled samples, that the content in α - belite was greater than in α′ - and β-belite, whereas for the normally cooled clinkers the opposite was found. Also, rapidly cooled clinkers showed a decrease in their ferritic and aluminate phases, but an enrichment in the iron content of the ferritic phase was observed. Cements made out of the above clinkers were tested for compressive strength and it was demonstrated that strength values increased effectively, when clinkers were rapidly cooled and their content in C4AF was high. A correlation was found between strength, LSF and C4AF content and a strength - time model was given, which fitted well the experimental points.
