By collecting the mercury drops from a special polarographic cell at each potential and measuring the radioactivity of the drops, a radioactivity-potential curve similar to that of I vs. V is obtained with radioactive elements reduced to the zero-oxidation state. The radioactivity measurement is much more sensitive than the measurement of the diffusion current and can be used for qualitative and quantitative determination of elements at lower concentrations than with conventional polarography. Non-radioactive elements can also be detected by making use of a radioactive element with a less negative half-wave potential, due to the oxidation-reduction replacement on the mercury drops of the non-radioactive by the radioactive element.
