Summary

Greece is one of the EU countries that possesssubstantial mineral wealth, consisting of a varietyof minerals and ores with a large industrialand economic interest. For the first time after along period of positive economic growth whichstimulated increased output, the minerals industryexperiences a significant decline in bothproduction and sales from the second half of2008 and afterwards. This decline followed thesharp fall in demand of raw materials in the sectorsof steel, construction and infrastructure. However, in the years of economic recession, the challenges for sustainable management, safety and environmental protection not onlyremain but also constitute the most pressingneeds of this era – deeply influencing the developmentof the mining industry, its traditionalcharacter for many centuries and finally its veryexistence. This paper presents production data for variousmineral commodities produced in Greece inthe period 2007-2011 fully illustrating the crisistrends and giving hints for lessons learned. Also, data from twelve groups of Sustainable DevelopmentIndicators (SDIs) provided by theGreek Mining Enterprises Association (GMEA)over this period are discussed giving informationnecessary for decision making, identifyingweaknesses, stimulating problem solving, evaluating the whole system of monitoring andimproving indicators. Results as well as optionsfor sectoral actions, best practices and policiesare also discussed, providing a holistic comparative analysis for sustainability assessment andvalidation of the overall performance of the sector.
