The current study focus on the determination of landfill air emissions in Greeceusing the LandGEM model for the period 1960-2007. The emission estimations from theLandGEM model were further compared with the IPCC methodology for the evaluation oflandfill emissions. In contrast to the IPCC method in which the methane emission potential iscalculated based on the amount of waste being disposed each year, the LandGEM modeldetermines the methane emission based on the amount of remaining organic waste. Furthermore, the LandGEM model assumes a time lag period of one year before the prevalence of anaerobicconditions and the beginning of biogas production. The current study concluded that theLandGEM model is an efficient modelling platform for the calculations of greenhouse gasemissions from landfills and can be used in conjunction with other models, such as the IPCCmodel, to derive realistic emission data
