Nonlinear optimal control may deliver optimal decisions under any scenario related tononlinear large-scale complex processes, such as the traffic flow on motorwaynetworks; this reflects an inherent intelligence of optimal control methods that may, atseveral instances, outperform the capabilities of human experts. After a shortintroduction, the presentation describes a general macroscopic discrete-time statespacemodel for the traffic flow on motorway networks that incorporates the impact ofvarious traffic control measures such as ramp metering, variable speed limits androute guidance. The described mathematical model provides a solid basis for theformulation of a general optimal control problem aiming at minimising the total timespent by all vehicles in the network. The related very large-scale optimal controlproblem is solved by use of efficient feasible-direction methods employing projectedgradients. Several application instances are provided to demonstrate the capabilities ofthe optimal control approach for the traffic flow control on extended motorwaynetworks. The presentation concludes with a short discussion of some of theaddressed issues.
