Περίληψη

As the worldwide concern for the sustainability of groundwater resources increases, groundwa-ter flow and mass transport simulation is essential for the efficient protection, planning and management of groundwater resources. The present study aims at evaluating the performance of a finite difference-based numerical model (MODFLOW) and a finite element and finite differ-ence hybrid coupling numerical model (Princeton Transport Code-PTC) simulating groundwater flow and nitrate mass transport in the alluvial aquifer of Trizina area. The calibration of groundwater flow in both models was performed by using groundwater hydraulic head data from 7 stress periods and the validation was based on a series of hydraulic head data for two stress periods in sufficient numbers of observation locations. The same periods were used for the calibration of the nitrate mass transport simulation models. The performance of each simula-tion model was evaluated by implementing a statistical sensitivity analysis revealing a better performance for the MODFLOW model regarding groundwater flow and an excellent perform-ance of both MODFLOW-MT3DMS and PTC for nitrate mass transport simulation.
