Summary

Bioremediation is a promising technology for combating marine oil spills. In thisstudy a mathematical model has been developed which describes the rate ofmicrobial growth around an oil droplet and estimates the utilization of keynutrients (O, N & P) as well as the rate of hydrocarbon degradation. The effectiveness of additives like lipophilic fertilizers (uric acid and lecithin)and biosurfactants of natural origin (lecithin and rhamnolipids) on thedegradation of crude oil hydrocarbons has been recently tested in our labs. Theaim of this work is to use the developed model to arrive at the most suitablenutrient addition strategy
