This paper aims to reveal the relationship between the organic matter (quantity, quality, depositional environment, maturity) in neogene formations of Messara basin (Crete), and the methane seeps occurring in numerous water wells in the studied area. For this purpose, geological setting is described and geochemical results from an extended sample set are presented. Organic matter was studied using standard geochemical procedures (Rock-Eval, CHNS analysis, fractionation into component groups, gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, biomarkers determination) on outcrops from two wells. The evaluation of the analytical results shows that the studied neogene formations constitute the source rock of the produced methane and can be marginally characterizedas gas shales. Considering recent progress in the exploitation of shallow biogenic methane bearing formations, as well as the very limited contribution of domestic hydrocarbon sources in Greek energy balance, the use of methane sources in the studied area becomes an interesting option.
