The purpose of this paper is to present a view of how the basic problems in the theory of equilibrium cracks are properly formulated in the context of an anisotropic gradient elasticity theory with surface energy proposed by Vardoulakis and his co-workers [1–4], and to discuss the results obtained. This theory, which is a generalization of Casal’s [5] original work on the 1-D tension bar problem, contains both a volume energy straingradient term, ℓ, and a surface energy strain-gradient term, ℓ’, both having the dimension of length.
