Περίληψη | The Upper Midwest has a distinct depositional gradient from west to east. A small fraction of 772 lakes sampled are presently acidic (0% in northern Minnesota, 4% in northcentral Wisconsin, and approximately 19% in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan). A simple alkalinity mass balance model was applied to lakes in the Upper Midwest. Lakes in the region are sensitive to future increases in acid deposition. At the pH of precipitation found in the Adirondack Mountains of New York (4.1), about 30% of the lakes would become acidified based on model predictions. The model can be used to estimate the population of lakes at risk under various levels of acid deposition in preliminary risk assessments. | en |
