Summary

Some first results of simulation studies for the control of deformable mirrors used to correct the effects of atmospheric turbulence to the image quality in a 1.5m telescope at a wavelength of 0.5μn are reported here. Images based on Kolmogorov turbulence have been formed and an attempt has been made to correct them via a deformable mirror, incident to the telescope wavefront, using the stochastic optimization ALOPEX parallel algorithm. The deformable mirror surface is parameterized with Zernike polynomials. The objective is to obtain good quality images as quickly as possible. It is found that images with a Strehl ratio of greater than 0.8 can be obtained by controlling the tip-tilt and spherical corrections (five parameters). Initial results are presented in regard to the speed of convergence of the optimization algorithm.
