ΠερίληψηThe project Balkwaste is a LIFE – Environment project (LIFE 07 ENV/RO/000686) aiming to promote sustainable waste management planning in the Balkan region and to develop an integrated decision tool in the Balkan Region. To achieve the objectives of the project and to analyze the structure of the solid municipal waste the on-site sampling was done in Bulgaria in Municipality Razlog with 23,018 inhabitants and in Romania in North-East Region formed of 6 counties of 3,734,546 inhabitants. The objectives of the sampling were the determination of the waste composition, recyclability of the waste and to obtain all relevant data that are necessary as an input data for the decision support software tool. The source of the municipal solid waste for sampling was from mixed municipal solid waste (MSW) from households and blocks without industry and big shopping centers and contained mixed packaging waste, biological waste, construction waste, etc. The random samples were taken from random selected containers from households collected in refuse vehicle and transported to sorting analysis site. The samples were analyzed in two phases. In first phase the sorting analyses of the random selected sample was made in two steps. In the first step the fractions probably suitable for recycling was separated: plastic (PET), plastic (PE), other plastic, paper, metals, glass, textile, wood and rest. The rest after first step sorting was done on the following fractions: mixed plastic, paper, textile and organic (rest). In the second phase two laboratory samples were taken to the laboratory of the company Gorenje Surovina. The first laboratory sample was taken from organic (rest) fraction after second step sorting and the second laboratory sample was taken from the light fraction suitable for the energy utilization.en
