All aspects of our everyday life have been enhanced and enriched, more and more increasingly over the last 20 years, by technological achievements that improve our quality of life. These technological advents overpower many times traditional ways educative communication, such as storytelling. Especially digital storytelling has been proven to be a very useful tool in terms of stimulating ideas of young students. This Diploma Thesis presents the design, the implementation and the evaluation of a desktop application which was built to support digital storytelling based on traditional Greek shadow theater. Our application is called eShadow Editor and its purpose is to create and edit digital 2D figures and scenes based on the traditional form of Greek shadow theater. Along with the already existing application eShadow built in the MUSIC lab of Technical University of Crete, the user can create from scratch and perform digital storytelling shadow theater shows.Due to its design and implementation technologies, eShadow Editor combines the traditional figure structure with very few user creativity limitations. Meaning that the user can create a figure through a wide variety of pre-design parts, combine them and then edit them in various ways (e.g. color filling, outline editing). Also through eShadow Editor, it is possible to create scenes that they resemble the traditional ones by importing pictures or creating ones using Microsoft Paint. In the context of this Diploma Thesis a flexible and expandable model was built in order to fully represent the traditional structure of a Greek shadow theater figure. A desktop (Java) application was designed and implemented with an easy to use Graphical User Interface (GUI) that allows the user to create its own traditional figures with vector graphics (SVG) and raster graphics scenes. The evaluation of the whole design process is presented as well as, some interesting results and feedbacks from young users at several expositions, which show the creative and co-operative importance of our work
