Summary

This study focuses on the analysis and evaluation of the Tamasos Dam, one of the most important water projects in Cyprus. The dam was constructed with the aim of water storage and the enrichment of the region's aquifers, which is especially critical due to the impacts of climate change, one of the major environmental challenges facing the Mediterranean and, consequently, Cyprus. The limited water resources in the area necessitate the creation of dams, such as Tamasos, which contribute to sustainable water management and the replenishment of underground aquifers. The study begins with a detailed description of the project, including general information about the dam, technical specifications, construction materials, and its auxiliary structures. The Tamasos Dam has significant features, such as its height, length, and capacity, while the auxiliary works include intake and overflow facilities, which ensure the dam's smooth operation. The objectives of the project include water storage for drinking and irrigation purposes, flood control, as well as providing recreational and tourism activities. Additionally, the dam contributes to the sustainable management and protection of the geophysical environment, with a particular emphasis on protecting, utilizing, restoring, and showcasing it through the dam's operation. The study evaluates the benefits arising from the operation of the dam, such as improved drinking water supply, enhanced agricultural productivity, and the creation of new job opportunities and business prospects. Simultaneously, it examines the environmental impacts, such as sediment accumulation, land loss, and changes in flora and fauna, as well as the economic and social impacts related to land-use changes and the effects on the local economy and quality of life. The study highlights the importance of integrating social and environmental factors into the planning and implementation of dams. The recommendations of the World Commission on Dams (WDC) emphasize the need for sustainable management and protection of natural resources, as well as the involvement of local communities in the decision-making process. Finally, improvements and ideas for future studies are suggested, which could further enhance the understanding and improvement of the dam. The application of new technologies and the development of strategies for environmental protection and support of local communities are essential for the success of future dam projects. Overall, the study provides a comprehensive overview of the Tamasos Dam, highlighting both the benefits and challenges associated with its operation and offering valuable guidance for the sustainable development of water resources in Cyprus.
