The research study examines the evolution of the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces in Greek apartment buildings, focusing on the impact of socioeconomic and urban planning changes over the past 100 years. The transition of Greek housing from single-family homes with courtyards to apartment buildings with small balconies has shaped the urban landscape, while the prioritization of profitability in the design process has limited the quality of outdoor living spaces. The study explores the evolution of building regulations that have significantly influenced the design of apartment buildings, from the introduction of reinforced concrete to the institutionalization of semi-outdoor spaces. Special emphasis is placed on the long-term adaptation of residents to the constraints of small balconies and the importance of this relationship, which became particularly evident during the Covid-19 pandemic when balconies served as the only connection between residents and the external environment. Through selected case studies, the research aims to initiate a dialogue on improving urban design, with the goal of strengthening residents’ connection to outdoor spaces and, consequently, enhancing the quality of life in Greek cities.
