Content SummarySmart grids are one of the major challenges of the energy sector for both the energy demand and energy supply of cities and communities. This chapter starts with an analysis of the various energy storage systems and their performance when coupled with smart grids. Electrical energy storage systems are very important for smart grids. In mechanical systems, energy storage is well established in the form of large-scale hydro-pumped systems, but also medium-and smaller-scale systems. Thermal energy storage is divided into sensible, latent, and thermochemical energy storage. The Leaf Community's smart grid is controlled by centralized software called the energy management system. The facility operator uses centralized software to monitor the smart grid and execute several control logics, in order to optimize the energy fluxes. The thermal energy storage system is mainly exploited to reduce the peak power of the Leaf Community's interconnected buildings.en
