This paper is research about the contrasts between the capital and the social movements centered on the changes in the urban fabric and the public space and it attempts to deconstruct the essence of the different interests that are registered in the political struggle of the two sides, using the special example of the area of Exarchia in the era of gentrification and privatization. The analysis of the urban policies that transformed the cities of western capitalism from the 19th to the 21st century, attempts to contribute to a deeper understanding of the structural features of the capitalist system in terms of the connection of spatial policies and planning with production, economy and social relations, while the investigation of the causes, objectives, content and forms that characterize the movements that emerge to this day as efforts to defend public space, cities and more broadly the interests of the working class, are the two central axes that set the basis for specialization of the research in the example of the Exarchia.
