In this thesis, the goal is to understand the environmental footprint of a residence. By conducting results through life cycle analysis, they are evaluated through comparison of all four scenarios of the residential building. The basic scenario is a conventional residential building in terms of its construction and energy efficiency and the remaining three scenarios have various changes in construction materials. By comparing the four scenarios, the difference of the environmental impact of the construction materials in the four different scenarios can be perceived and then the size of the environmental footprint of the total operational energy compared to the rest of the life stages of the residence is distinguished. The case study is a residential building of a four-member family in the city of Eleusina located in Attica, Greece. The life cycle analysis software used is Athena Impact Estimator for Buildings which has the ability to give results for each stage of the life cycle of the residence. The stages of the life cycle of the building are the extraction of the raw material from the environment, their transport, the construction process of the building, its operational use, its demolition and the waste treatment. The software used to find the total operational energy is SketchUp for the 3D design of the residential building and then Open Studio for its energy modeling and simulation.
