In this diploma thesis, a case study of an electrically propelled containership with refrigerated containers is presented. The electric power generation system is made by generator sets, while the propulsion system is full electric. Ships implementing electric propulsion along with a well programmed energy management system can show significant fuel consumption reduction and at the same time compliance with the environmental constraints. The goal is for the ship to conclude a predefined voyage, while keeping the inner temperature of every refrigerated container in the ship bounded as well as to do that while the total operation cost is minimized. The ship must also complete the voyage at a predefined time, and maintain the emissions below a certain limit, that is indicated by some standard for the maritime industry indexes (EEOI, CII). A Multi Agent System (MAS) was formulated so that refrigerated container temperatures remain bounded and the environmental and technical constraints hold. Various operational scenarios were examined to obtain the minimum total cost. The most economical scenario proved to be the one that minimizes the cost of electricity generation, through the parallel regulation of the ship's speed and the electric power consumption of the refrigerated containers, in an optimal way.
